“Have you heard anything about scientists speaking at funerals?”
Hajime furrowed his eyebrows before tipping his head to the side, “What?”
“I read an article about a physicist speaking at someone’s funeral,” Oikawa answered, eyes still turned up at the night sky. “For non-religious folk.”
Hajime leaned against one of his knees, legs rustling around in the overgrown grass, “Makes sense I guess.”
For a small moment Oikawa was quiet, eyes staring into the sky like he was sifting through it, searching. “He said,” he began, his voice at the same volume, but holding what might have been a small amount of reverence, “that energy never dies.”
Hajime turned his head toward Oikawa again, but remained silent.
“The cosmos exploded and somehow, over time, there was us.” Oikawa shifted, staring earnestly into the sky as he spoke, “At our core, he said we’re all made of the same things.” He swallowed, a faint smile tugging at his mouth, “He said we’re all made of stardust.”
Oikawa’s face was relaxed, lost in wonder as he stared up at the night. When he watched Oikawa, Hajime could see it. He could see the reflection of the stars in the glass of his eyes, the spark of curiosity burning behind them. He could see the glow of OIkawa’s skin, electric and so alive, and when he smiled he watched it all flare brighter, the energy of the cosmos shining through his features.
He could see a human made of stardust.
“Makes you feel grander, doesn’t it?” Oikawa asked, finally turning his attention toward Hajime.
Hajime’s lips softened, curving slightly upwards, “It does.”
